Maintenance and Operation Guidelines

  • No Prolonged Dry Running: Although designed with a top-discharge cooling frame, running the pump completely dry or in extremely low water for too long will overheat the motor and destroy the mechanical seals.
  • Verify Correct Rotation: Always check the motor rotation arrow before full operation. Reverse rotation drastically drops flow rates and can loosen the impeller or agitator.
  • Monitor Oil Chamber (Every 2,000 Hrs): Inspect the seal oil regularly. If the oil looks milky or watery, the mechanical seals must be replaced immediately to prevent terminal water damage to the motor.
  • Prevent Large Debris Clogging: While the built-in agitator handles heavy sand and slurry, large rocks, ropes, or plastics can jam the impeller. Clear the steel strainer frequently.
  • Never Pull the Cable: The KBD pump is heavy cast iron; always lift it by the handle or a dedicated chain. Pulling the power cable will breach the water seal and short the motor.
  • Flush After Use: If pumping bentonite, cement, or thick mud, run the pump in clean water for a few minutes before shutting it down to prevent solids from hardening inside the casing.

However, continuous dry running is not recommended as it can overheat the motor and damage the mechanical seals. The pump should remain submerged up to the recommended minimum liquid level during continuous duty.

Q5: What is the maximum permissible slurry temperature and pH range?

  • Temperature: Standard models are rated for liquid temperatures up to 40°C (104°F). High-temperature customizations are available upon request.
  • PH Range: The standard cast iron/high-chrome configuration is optimized for abrasive slurry with a pH range of 6 to 10. For highly acidic or highly alkaline chemical slurries, a full stainless steel series is recommended instead.

Q6: Does the pump require a separate control panel or built-in protection?

The KBD pump comes equipped with a built-in thermal/amperage motor protector (Item 33) that automatically shuts off the pump in case of phase failure, voltage drops, or impeller lock-ups.
