Why are the vertical multistage pumps used in the petroleum industry? Could we use a horizontal pump instead?

There are two main considerations for using vertical multistage pumps:

When lifting liquid from an underground tank or pool – a vertical multistage pump with the stages submerged in the fluid being pumped is the best way to accomplish this. That’s especially true where the liquid level is way below grade. The NPSH available to a submerged pump is much higher than for a horizontal pump placed at grade. The submerged pump also has no priming issues.

When plot space is limited – the footprint of a vertical pump is much smaller than a horizontal pump of the same capacity. If you are trying to fit a new pump service into an existing structure, sometimes a vertical pump is the only kind that will fit
