Connecting a hydraulic submersible slurry pump to an excavator is a great way to turn your machine into a powerful dredging tool. Since the pump runs off the excavator’s hydraulic system, you don’t need an external power pack.

Here is a simple guide on how to get it done:

1. The Mechanical Connection

First, you need to physically attach the pump to the excavator arm.

  • Remove the Bucket: Take off the standard bucket or attachment.

  • Use a Mounting Bracket: Most slurry pumps come with a specific “adapter plate” or “mounting bracket.” You pin this bracket directly to the excavator’s arm (the stick) just like you would with a bucket.

  • Secure the Pins: Ensure the pins are greased and locked with cotter pins or bolts.

2. The Hydraulic Connection

This is the “heart” of the setup. You will use the Auxiliary Hydraulic Lines (the ones usually used for a hammer or auger).

  • Pressure Line (In): Connect the high-pressure hose from the excavator to the “Inlet” port on the pump’s hydraulic motor.

  • Return Line (Out): Connect the “Outlet” port of the pump back to the excavator’s hydraulic tank.

    • Pro Tip: For slurry pumps, it is often best to use a “Case Drain” line. This is a third, smaller hose that prevents pressure buildup from blowing out the motor seals.

Now that the pump has power, it needs somewhere to send the mud.

  • Attach the Slurry Hose: Connect a heavy-duty flexible discharge hose to the pump’s outlet.

  • Route the Hose: Secure the hose along the excavator arm using clamps or heavy-duty zip ties (allow for some slack so the arm can move freely).

  • Lay the Pipe: Run the rest of the hose to your discharge area (wherever you want the waste to go).


4. Safety and Testing

Before you start digging into the mud, do a quick check:

  • Check Rotation: Briefly flick the hydraulic switch to ensure the pump impeller is spinning in the right direction.

  • Check for Leaks: Look for any spraying oil at the connections.

  • Lower Slowly: Submerge the pump into the water/slurry before turning it on to avoid “dry running” the seals.
